Organic Waste Recycling Draws in $110 Million - Energy Digital

Start-up company Harvest Power Inc. just raised $110 million to help turn some of America's huge sums of organic waste into energy and fertilizer. Along with Waste Management Inc., the nation's largest trash processor, the two companies have vowed to stop using landfills completely in upcoming years as New York City evaluates new waste-to-energy facilities.

A Spanish wastewater company, Aqualia Gestion Integral del Augua SA, started a $15.9 million (12 million-euro) project to use wastewater and algae to generate energy. The project will grow the algae using sunlight and nutrients in the wastewater, which will then be harvested for transformation into biofuels. According to Aqualia, the All-Gas project could generate enough biomethane and biodiesel for 400 fleet vehicles.

NASA reveals a newly developed system that produces algae biofuel, fertilizer and possibly animal feed, while capturing carbon dioxide and preventing pollution from wastewater. The Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae (OMEGA) system consists of self-contained bags of wastewater and algae cultures that float in seawater off the coast to produce biofuels.

MUMBAI, India, April 18, 2012 -- /PRNewswire/ -- SunEdison, a leading worldwide solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc., announced the activation of a 25 Megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant located within a multi-developer, multi-facility solar park at Charanka village in Patan district, Gujarat, India. The project, which was completed in four months, is comprised of more than 89,000 solar PV modules. With the completion of this plant, SunEdison has now activated a total of 45MW as part of the Gujarat Solar Program.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has issued a SEK (Swedish krona) 1 billion ($148 million) ‘green’ bond, in participation with two new underwriters.
