Indigenous Peoples Can Show the Path to Low-Carbon Living If Their Land Rights Are Recognized

Indigenous Peoples Can Show the Path to Low-Carbon Living If Their Land Rights Are Recognized – News Watch

Many indigenous peoples are living examples of societies thriving with sustainable, low-carbon lifestyles. Successfully meeting the global climate change challenge requires that much of the world shift from high carbon-living to low.  This shift is daunting. Current emissions for Australia and the United States average about 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide per person. In the coming decades that needs to fall to two tonnes per person as it is currently in Brazil or the Dominican Republic.

GE Purchases 51% Stake of Oklahoma Wind Farm, Now Owns 9.6 Gigawatts of Capacity : TreeHugger

Investments in wind power seem to have a nice tailwind, so to speak. Warren Buffett's energy utility has been making big investments in wind (as well as solar), and now GE is making new investments too. One arm of the giant corporate octopus makes wind turbines, but another arm - GE Energy Financial Services - tries to make money by investing its capital in projects that it thinks will be successful and profitable. Apparently the Chisholm View wind farm in Oklahoma qualifies.

Los Angeles Readies Feed-In Tariff Program - Just Needs Mayor's Signature : TreeHugger

The Los Angeles City Council apparently isn't waiting for either the state or the Feds to enact a feed-in tariff for renewable energy—the backbone of successful renewable energy promotion in many nations, widely cited as being the most efficient method of giving deployment of clean energy a boost.

Sucking carbon dioxide out of the air: Neat idea, but impractical

Sucking carbon dioxide out of the air: Neat idea, but impractical - The Washington Post

Humanity is making dismal progress on curbing its greenhouse gas emissions. That’s led some scientists to dream up zany geoengineering schemes to avert drastic climate change. One promising idea involved sucking carbon dioxide out of the air. Alas, new research suggests, this isn’t very practical:
You can strip CO2 from the air with chemical filters or by boosting reactions occurring as rocks weather. Colin Axon of Brunel University in Uxbridge, UK, and Alex Lubansky at the University of Oxford estimated what it would take to remove the 30 gigatonnes of CO2 we emit every year.

That would mean processing 75,000 Gt of dry air. Scaling up proposals to filter air would use 180 Gt of clean water per year, depriving 53 million people of water, on top of the 66 per cent of the world’s population who will face water shortages by 2025.
To make matters worse, mopping up carbon dioxide with chemical filters would use an enormous amount of energy and be prohibitively expensive. A study last year in Nature pegged the cost of carbon dioxide removal at about $600 per ton, which is about seven times more pricey than even the high-end estimates of carbon taxes deemed necessary to curtail the world’s emissions.

Sustainable palm oil 'a serious business opportunity'

Environmental Finance | News | Sustainable palm oil 'a serious business opportunity' – WWF

Financial gains and other business benefits for palm oil producers outweigh the costs of meeting sustainable palm oil criteria, according to the WWF.  Implementing the principles and criteria of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Production (RSPO) involves extra costs, but in many cases lead to increased revenues and market access, improved staff morale and reduced labour turnover, operational improvements, access to capital and the reduction of social conflicts, said the conservation group.

Looking for a science project for your teenager? DECC launches £20m marine energy funding competition

DECC launches £20m marine energy funding competition - 05 Apr 2012 - News from BusinessGreen

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has today launched its long awaited £20m funding competition for two large scale marine energy demonstration projects, calling on developers to submit proposals for new wave or tidal arrays.  Under the Marine Energy Array Demonstrator (MEAD) scheme, marine energy developers have until June 1 to submit an online application for funding with the government promising to announce the successful projects before the end of the year.

Highly-efficient solar cells aim to power your iPhone

Highly-efficient solar cells aim to power your iPhone - 05 Apr 2012 - News from BusinessGreen

Powering smart phones such as iPhones with solar technology has moved a step closer, after a UK company set a new record for converting indoor light into electricity.  Cardiff-based G24 Innovations (G24i) claims to have produced a photovoltaic (PV) cell with an efficiency rate of 26 per cent, beating the previous record, also held by the company, by over 10 percentage points.

The EU-ETS: Fix it or shut it down, please

The EU-ETS: Fix it or shut it down, please | Eco-Business.com

According to Bloomberg (3 April 2012), “EU carbon allowances for December fell as much as 4.6 per cent to a record [low of] 6.05 Euros a metric tonne on the ICE Futures Europe exchange in London after preliminary data released yesterday [2 April] showed emissions from factories and utilities in the region dropped 2.4 per cent last year. That implies a third consecutive annual surplus of emissions permits”.
Many commentators argue that because Europe is in the midst of an existential crisis (together with a credit crunch and an unemployment mess), this is a difficult time to fix the EU emissions trading scheme (the EU-ETS).

World's carbon markets down 20 per cent in 2012

Bloomberg: World's carbon markets down 20 per cent in 2012 - 05 Apr 2012 - News from BusinessGreen

The value of global carbon markets plunged by over a fifth during the first three months of the year, despite increased volumes of trading, as a dramatic drop in the price of carbon undermined the sector.
Figures from analysts Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) show the world's carbon market fell to €14.2bn over the first quarter of 2012, 21 per cent less than the last three months of 2011 and 41 per cent down on the same period a year ago.

Carbon market value to slump in 2012

Environmental Finance | News | Carbon market value to slump in 2012 – BNEF

The value of the global carbon market will fall in 2012, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), which has reduced its forecast of the market’s worth in 2012 by 16%.  This will be the first time the market has shrunk in value. Between 2010 and 2011, the market grew by 10%.  Because of the plummeting carbon price, €85 billion ($111 billion) worth of carbon trades will take place in 2012, down from its previous estimate of €101 billion, the analysis firm said on Thursday.

Government urged to include aviation and shipping in UK carbon targets

Government urged to include aviation and shipping in UK carbon targets | Environment | guardian.co.uk

The government's green credentials will be put to a "key test" on Thursday, as ministers will be urged by their advisers to include greenhouse gas emissions from aviation and shipping in the UK's carbon targets.  If airlines and container ships are included, the task of meeting the targets is made much harder. These two large and growing sources of emissions are currently excluded from the goals under a technicality.
