Sober Look: The Chicago Climate Exchange and the "cap and trade" market in the US

In 2010 the UK parent of CCX called Climate Exchange Plc (CLE) was sold to ICE.Here is a quick follow-up on the 2009 post called Death of market. It discussed the collapse of the voluntary carbon emissions credits market on the US based Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), as the proposed "cap and trade" legislation got derailed.

Even the “greenest” product is not really environmentally friendly

Enhancing Sustainability through Responsible Supplier Partnerships

In most environmental preferable purchasing (EPP) programs, the policies primarily focus on the end product because that is easier to see, manipulate and control. However, even the “greenest” product is not really environmentally friendly if it is manufactured in a facility that wastes water and energy, transported in gas-guzzling vehicles and over-packaged as if expecting to be dropped from a 10-story building. Fortunately, most manufacturers realize both the environmental and cost benefits to be had from streamlining and greening their operations to continually improve their performance.

BP's gas emissions drops from 64.9 metric tons to 61.8 Mte

BP Sustainability Report: Greenhouse Emissions, Energy Use Drop

Oil giant BP’s direct greenhouse gas emissions dropped from 64.9 million metric tons in 2010 to 61.8 Mte in 2011, according to the company’s latest combined annual and sustainability report. BP attributes the 3.1 Mte decrease – an almost five percent drop – to the temporary reduction in activity in some of its businesses as a result of maintenance work, and also to the sale of assets as part of the company’s disposal program.

Power from coal processing trapping carbon leads China to victory over U.S

China Beats U.S. With Power From Coal Processing Trapping Carbon

After studying chemistry at Shanghai’s Fudan University, Jane Chuan and Wang Youqi pursued doctorates in the U.S. She got hers from what’s now the University of Buffalo in 1988, the year they married. Wang graduated in 1994 from the California Institute of Technology. A few years later, they were cashing in stock options in Silicon Valley companies they’d co-founded, one of which created a luminescent chemical to store X-ray images. Their home in Atherton, California, had seven bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and an acre of land, Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its May issue.

Future of carbon pricing is "very strong" as regional markets develop across the world

Regional emissions trading systems boost carbon price concept

The global carbon markets have been held back by a lack of political ambition, but the future of carbon pricing is “very strong” as regional markets are developing across the world, said Abyd Karmali, global head of carbon markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The developing carbon markets in California and Australia, which have learned from the design flaws of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), have “taken that carbon market design to the next level”, he told attendees at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) Summit in New York last week.
