Cap and trade can either inhibit or encourage businesses

BusinessDay - Carbon tax ‘could either encourage or inhibit business’

Tax consultant Trevor Baptiste says while the proposed carbon tax could be an important incentive for business, it could, if not implemented carefully, negatively affect business and growth

Wind farms may be ugly, but they are efficient

Debate whether windfarms are ugly but not their efficiency, says Lord Turner | Environment | The Guardian

Claims that windfarms cannot reduce carbon emissions are "rubbish" and result from critics ignoring the facts and "believing what they want to believe", according to Lord (Adair) Turner, chairman of the government's official independent advisers, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC).

When your servant becomes your master

Finance should be our servant not our master | Guardian Sustainable Business | guardian.co.uk

The Occupy movement are right in their assertion that it is time to make capital markets our servant and not our master. The question is how. When members of the movement tried to takeover Trafalgar Square, one protester Sarah, 24 was quoted in the Evening Standard as saying: "We are going to stay here until the world changes and we create a better society." Utopianism like that is pretty close to nihilism. Many people agree on the need to restore the moral legitimacy of capitalism. It is important that those who have launched the strongest protests engage with those who have thought hardest about the solutions.

Sewage to power

New device heralds potential to turn sewage plants into power stations | Environment | guardian.co.uk

Sewage can be used to generate electricity using a new device revealed by scientists on Thursday. It combines a fuel cell with other technologies to convert waste water treatment stations into power plants, which the researchers believe could provide the power for entire water grids. "We certainly could take care of the whole water system: the treating and pumping of water, which currently requires substantial amounts of power," said Prof Bruce Logan at Pennsylvania State University in the US. "We also treated the organic matter much faster." His team's work is published in the journal Science and is "the proof of concept", Logan said. "Our hope now is to optimise the electricity generation as much as possible."

What's a little fraud to save the Earth?

Steven Greenhut: What's a little fraud to save the Earth? | gleick, heartland, global - Opinion - The Orange County Register

SACRAMENTO – If the theory of man-made global warming were such a self-obvious truth, the result of scientific consensus, then why do its advocates keep committing fraud to advance it? Even more disturbing, why are some writers willing to defend this behavior?

Is the carbon market a doomed fantasy?

Mark Landsbaum: Carbon market a doomed government fantasy | carbon, government, europe - Opinion - The Orange County Register

California's political class yearns to be European. Here's some advice for Gov. Jerry Brown and associates: Beware of what you desire. You just may get it.  Their latest self-destructive fascination is the lunacy of a carbon trading market. It's part of the still-loonier cap-and-trade scheme to save California from the looniest concept of all, make-believe devastation from manmade global warming. It doesn't get more European than that.

Renewable energy storage legislation introduced in the US Senate

Bill promotes renewable energy storage - Vallejo Times Herald

Congressmen Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, and Chris Gibson, R-N.Y., have introduced legislation to give tax breaks for investing in energy storage systems, Thomspon's office announced Thursday.
H.R. 4096, The Storage Technology for Renewable and Green Energy 2012 Act, would provide tax credits to individuals and businesses when they invest in systems that can save excess energy for use during peak demand periods. This reduces electricity bills, enhances the reliability of alternative energy sources, and increases the efficiency and security of the electric grid, Thompson's office said.  A companion bill, S.1845, was introduced in the U.S. Senate last fall by Senators Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and Susan Collins, R-Maine.

How the Searaser seawater pump generates electricity

This animation shows how Searaser produces electricity. As the ocean swell moves two buoys up and down, it pumps seawater through a pipe to an onshore turbine. The green energy company Ecotricity, which has a controlling stake in the technology, believes it is potentially a cheaper way of producing electricity than any other form of generation including all fossil fuels
