Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Tony Tyler, the head of the International Air Transport Association, talks about the impact of European Union emissions levies on Chinese airlines, and the outlook for the global aviation industry. China last week barred carriers from taking part in an EU emissions-trading system because of concerns it will raise costs and impinge on non-European governments' sovereignty. New Apple Office One Of The Largest Solar Data Centres In US
Apple hopes to turn green with solar power data centre | Environment | guardian.co.uk
Apple, ranked the least green of the big tech companies earlier this year, is moving quietly to repair its reputation by switching its vast east coast data centre from coal to solar power. Local officials in North Carolina say the company is preparing to build a solar farm adjacent to its $1bn data centre in Maiden. The facility could help Apple recover from a Greenpeace report earlier this year which said its cloud-computing operations – run from centres such as the one in North Carolina – were heavily reliant on dirty energy such as coal.

USC sustainability office updates certification program
Sustainability office revamps certification program | Daily Trojan
The USC Office of Sustainability has updated its Green Certification Program to make offices on campus more sustainable. For an office at USC to be certified, a member — known as a Green Office Leader — of the Office of Sustainability teaches office members how to be more environmentally friendly using an online calculator. The calculator has a checklist that examines an office’s sustainability level. The office can receive a bronze, silver, gold or platinum certification based on how many points it earns. The certification lasts two years and can then be re-certified.

Airlines seek UN help on EU emissions framework
BBC News - Airlines seek United Nations deal on EU carbon scheme
It comes days after China banned its airlines from joining the scheme, which levies a charge on flights in EU airspace based on carbon emissions. Other nations such as the US and Canada have also opposed the plan. IATA said if not resolved quickly, the issue could hurt all parties involved. "I very much hope of course that we are not seeing the beginning of a trade war on this issue and eventually wiser counsels will prevail," said Tony Tyler, Director General of IATA.

Global warming: Bacteria a wild card in ocean carbon cycle « Summit County Citizens Voice
SUMMIT COUNTY — As the upper layers of the ocean warm there will less mixing of water. Increased stratification will probably have a profound impact on microbes and plankton that pump carbon out of the atmosphere – but researchers say it’s still unclear whether these processes will increase global warming or decrease it.

Lower Bahamian Carbon Footprint
Bahamas Lowering Carbon Footprint
In 2010, the Bahamas imported more than 7.8 million barrels of oil and other petroleum products, spending nearly $700 million in the process. Now, the country is beginning to lower its oil consumption — and its carbon footprint. “The typical household in the Bahamas produces approximately one ton of carbon dioxide a year, through the consumption of petroleum products,” said Phenton Neymour, Minister of State for the Environment. And it’s no different for those visiting the country. “The carbon footprint of the average tourist visiting the Bahamas is not significantly less per day than that of residents,” he said. “The energy intensity of the Bahamas is relatively high.”
