Sustainable energy is answer to wider crisis: EU's Hedegaard | Reuters

(Reuters) - Energy efficiency offers one of the best tools for tackling the world's debt and social crises as sustainable development comes in from the margins to the mainstream of economic debate, the European Union's climate chief said on Tuesday.

UN Panel: Only Sustainable Development Can Create a 'Resilient Planet'

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, January 31, 2012 (ENS) - A panel of current and former heads of government, ministers and lawmakers Monday launched a plan for world leaders to propel an "ever-green" energy revolution that could wean the world off fossil fuels, when they meet in Brazil later this year. The report of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability links the United Nations' goals of reducing poverty and inequality to promoting the use of wind, solar and other renewable energy sources to power the economies of rich and poor nations alike.

55 EU Airports Endorse Carbon Program

55 Major European Airports Join Carbon Program - ABC News

Fifty-five major European airports accounting for over half of all passenger traffic on the continent are now part of a program aimed at cutting carbon emissions, Airports Council International said Tuesday.  Airports are changing airport vehicles and buses to electric or hybrid power, and installing solar panels to generate the airport's own electricity, among other measures. Specific taxiing techniques are used to reduce fuel burn, and ground power is provided to parked airliners instead of having them leave their engines running.

Summary House of Commons Report on the EU Emissions Trading System

DocuBase Article: The EU Emissions Trading System

The inclusion of aviation in the EU Emissions Trading System from 1 January this year is a welcome sign that the EU is willing to flex the muscle of its market power to compel other countries to adopt climate change mitigation measures. Unilateral and courageous action by the EU created a carbon price for over half of the world’s aviation emissions for the first time. In this Report, we argue that unilateral action at the EU level can produce real environmental benefits within the EU and encourage other countries to adopt their own emissions reduction measures.

Allianz, C-Quest Capital launch India carbon project | Reuters

Jan 31 (Reuters) - German insurer Allianz SE and U.S.-based C-Quest Capital LCC said on Tuesday they will finance the installation of about 8.5 million energy-efficient lightbulbs in India in return for U.N.-backed carbon offsets. The 10-year project will fund the installation of compact fluorescent lightbulbs in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and northern Delhi, Armin Sandhoevel, chief executive of Allianz Climate Solutions, told Reuters in Singapore. He said the project would cut about 3.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the decade, about the equivalent of the annual pollution from one million cars, and earn 3.2 million internationally tradeable U.N. offsets called certified emission reductions, or CERs.

California’s Cap and Trade Rules Land In Court

California’s Low Carbon Standard Rules Spark Controversy

WASHINGTON – An article in yesterday’s Washington Post assessed California’s efforts to modify the standards of gasoline. The state’s proposition, to lower the amount of carbon in fuel sold in the state, has sparked a public battle that to date has prevented the rule from being enforced. And in light of a strong opposing lobbying effort as well as tight state budgets, the Post speculated the “ambitious climate policy” might not ever get off the ground. “To us, it’s the most credible and powerful mechanism we can put in place,” said Dan Sperling, a member of California’s Air Resources Board. “It’s an incentive to invest in other things besides oil.”
